Every component in the WorkServer connects to the Intelligent Maintenance Network via the Midplane, including all Modules, Media Carriers, and Fan Units. This independent Network provides a simple yet powerful management interface for all WorkServer components. Maintenance Computers can access each component's Maintenance Node in order to request status reports, receive alarm messages, and directly manage each component's specific control functions. The Network provides a single interface for all components in both single- and multiple-Shelf-Unit systems, and all maintenance functions can be performed both locally and remotely.
One or more Maintenance Computers provide system management for the WorkServer. Maintenance Computers are UNIX or PC compatible computers running GNP's Intelligent Maintenance Network management software. These computers communicate with the Intelligent Maintenance Network through any of several interfaces: directly using ttya or remotely via a serial line or modem. Automated or manual systems running on Maintenance Computers can control a wide variety of maintenance, repair, and management actions.
Each WorkServer component has a built-in Maintenance Node which provides a customizable connection to the Intelligent Maintenance Network. The Maintenance Node is a programmable, intelligent processor with component-specific sensors and controls. These Nodes transmit status information and alarm signals to Maintenance Computers and allow direct management of the components' control and I/O systems. Each component's Maintenance Node supports a dry contact relay as well as a wide range of remote management and alarm functions.
